Chris Owens​

European & American Specialist
in Equine Surgery

Chris is an ACVS and ECVS Board Certified Equine and Large Animal Surgeon originally from Australia where he graduated from the University of Queensland. He undertook a surgical residency at Charles Sturt University. Whilst there he completed a doctorate looking at complications of surgical methods of castration and various post-operative protocols. After his time there, Chris worked in a racehorse focused surgical practice in Toowoomba, Queensland, before moving to Bristol where he joined Bristol University Teaching Hospital, Langford. In 2020, Chris relocated to Exeter and established South West Equine Referral Practice at Nutwell Estate where he leads the clinical team.

Chris’s clinical interests include colic and caesarean surgery, airway surgery, fracture repair, minimally invasive surgery and reproductive surgery.

Luke Poore


Luke is an experienced equine clinician having graduated from Cambridge University then undertaken an internship at Bell Equine Veterinary Hospital, residencies at Edinburgh University, Valley Equine Hospital and the B and W Equine Hospital. He has also worked as a lecturer and was acting head of the Equine Medicine and Surgery Departments at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Luke holds an RCVS certificate in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics), an MSc in equine gait analysis and is an Advanced Practitioner in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics). He has published peer reviewed papers in a number of international journals and is a peer reviewer for the Equine Veterinary Journal and The Journal of The South African Veterinary Association.

Luke joined us in July 2022 and has thoroughly enjoyed undertaking lameness evaluations within the practice and assisting with the surgical case load.

Ben Crisp

Equine Anaesthesia

Ben graduated from Liverpool University and went into mixed practice, after discovering a talent and passion for anaesthesia.

Ben continues to work in equine anaesthesia while also spending the rest of his clinical time practicing in other species and disciplines. Ben’s clinical interests include TIVA and balanced anaesthesia, pain management and comparative physiology and the effects of anaesthetics on various species.

Adeel Khan​

Equine Medicine Clinician

Adeel graduated from The University of Nottingham and soon after moved across the world to Australia to start his equine internship at the University of Queensland Equine Specialist Hospital, followed by an equine internal medicine residency at the University of Melbourne. It was during his residency his interest in critical care developed. After his residency, Adeel started as an internal medicine clinician at Langford Equine Hospital, where he worked alongside Chris and Joy. Following this, he has also worked with the charity Bransby Horses, focusing on geriatric medicine.

Adeel enjoys all aspects of internal medicine and his clinical interests include: equine emergency and critical care, neonatal medicine, ophthalmology and cardiology.

Eimear McHale


Eimear graduated from University College Dublin in 2017 and moved to the UK where she began her career working as a mixed practice vet.  After a year in mixed practice, Eimear began her equine internship at Langford Equine Hospital. Following this, she moved to Devon where she spent 3 years working at a busy first opinion practice before joining South West Equine in July.

Eimear enjoys being hands on with both medical and surgical cases and has a specific clinical interest in poor performance and lameness.

Joy Webber

Head Nurse

Joy, a Registered Equine Veterinary Nurse, joined Bristol University teaching hospital in 1994 and rose to the position of Equine Hospital Head Nurse. During her time in this role, she oversaw the clinical standards of the nursing care in the hospital, as well as mentoring countless students, interns, and residents during their formative years. Following the closure of the Langford Equine Hospital, South West Equine were extremely lucky to recruit Joy as our Head Nurse. She has now turned her substantial clinical expertise and experience to South West Equine Referrals.

Joy enjoys all aspects of equine practice, but particularly enjoys colic surgical nursing, endoscopy, critical care nursing, and clinical teaching of veterinary and nursing students and post-graduates.

Elyssa Arden

Trainee Equine Veterinary Nurse

Elyssa recently joined the South West Equine Referral Practice team as a trainee nurse, which is a role that involves working closely with our team.
Elyssa grew up surrounded by horses. She has worked on her family-run yard for several years and enjoys getting out competing on her own horses.

Natalie Newman

Trainee Equine Veterinary Nurse

Having completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management at Bicton College, Natalie spent eight years at a local racing yard working as a stable hand and work rider – broadening her knowledge and understanding of the horses in her care.


Archie Moffat

Archie graduated from Nottingham University in July 2023, having completed externships in a variety of equine hospitals in his final year.

He is interested in all facets of equine veterinary medicine and is looking forward to the diverse caseload over the next 12 months.

Kate Parker

BVMedSci (Hons), BVM BVS (Hons) MRCVS

Kate graduated from Nottingham University earlier this year and is excited to be joining us as a veterinary intern. She has particular interests in anaesthesia and internal medicine.

Catherine Chanin

Practice Manager

Catherine gained a degree in Equine Veterinary Nursing from Hartpury College in 2012 and further expanded her knowledge by completing an Advanced Veterinary Nursing Diploma.
She has worked as a Head Equine Veterinary Nurse at a first opinion and referral hospital followed by 5 years as a sole Equine Veterinary Nurse in a busy ambulatory practice.
Catherine has joined our team as our Practice Manager after returning to work following her maternity leave, her role includes ensuring the smooth running of the practice alongside training the student equine nurses. Outside of work she enjoys working her two cocker spaniels.

Laura Parker

Practice Administrator

Laura joined the South West Equine Referral team in February 2021, coming from an administration background at a local saddle fitting company and first opinion equine vets. Her role within South West Equine is that of supporting the vets, nurses and staff alongside the day to day running of the office. Laura will be the main point of contact in reception for referring vets and for patients owners. 

At home, Laura has 2 daughters who are keen members of the local Pony Club, riding club and National Schools Equestrian Association teams.
